What Is a 'Class' in a Tuition Centre? Class vs Batch Explained
A 'class' in TuitionDesk is the group of students sharing a schedule, teacher, and fee plan — the same concept other apps call a 'batch'.
If you've looked at more than one tuition-centre management app, you've probably noticed the same feature wears two different names. One app calls it a "class." Another calls it a "batch." A third might call it a "section" or a "group." They're all describing the exact same thing, and once you see past the naming, choosing software (or just understanding your own centre's setup) gets a lot simpler.
What a class actually is
A class is the basic teaching unit of a tuition centre: a fixed group of students who show up together, at the same time, for the same subject, with the same teacher. Everything else in the software hangs off this one unit:
- Schedule — the days, start time, and duration the class meets
- Teacher — who takes this class (one class can also have more than one teacher across different subjects)
- Students — the specific students enrolled in this class, not just "all students at the centre"
- Fee plan — what each student in this class pays, and how often (monthly, per-session, or a session pack)
- Attendance — every session this class runs generates its own attendance record
If your centre runs a "Class 10 CBSE Maths — Evening" group of 18 students who meet Tuesday and Thursday at 5 PM, that entire unit — schedule, teacher, roster, fees, attendance — is one class.
Class vs batch: is there actually a difference?
No. "Class" and "batch" describe the identical concept. The difference is purely which word a piece of software (or a person) chooses to use for it:
| Term | Where you'll hear it |
|---|---|
| Class | TuitionDesk's app, help articles, Ask Aiyan, and most school-style tuition centres |
| Batch | Some competing tuition/coaching software, and coaching institutes that use training-institute language (a "batch" of trainees) |
| Section | Schools, when splitting one grade into parallel groups |
| Group | Informally, especially for smaller or newer centres |
None of these is more "correct" than the others — they're regional and product conventions, not different features. If you're coming from software that said "batch," everything you already know about batches — creating one, assigning a teacher, enrolling students, setting a schedule — applies directly to a TuitionDesk class.
How many classes can you run?
Classes themselves are unlimited on every TuitionDesk plan — Free included. There is no "create up to N classes" cap anywhere in the pricing. What actually scales with your plan is:
| Plan | Students | Teachers | Counsellors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 10 | 1 | 1 |
| Starter (₹99–₹499, 20–75 students) | 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 75 | 2 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 | 1 / 1 / 2 / 2 / 3 |
| Growth 75 (₹699) | 75 | 7 | 4 |
| Growth 200 (₹999) | 200 | 15 | 5 |
| Pro 100 (₹1,499) | 100 | 20 | 7 |
| Pro 500 (₹1,999) | 500 | 30 | 10 |
| Enterprise | unlimited | unlimited | unlimited |
So a Free-plan centre with 10 students can still organise those 10 students into as many classes as makes sense — three small classes of 3–4 students each, for example — at no extra cost. The limit is on people (students, teachers, counsellors), never on how you group them into classes.
Class vs "batch timing" vs section — related terms you'll see
A few adjacent terms are worth untangling while we're here:
- Batch timing usually just means the time slot a class runs at (e.g. "the 5 PM batch") — it's describing the schedule of a class, not a separate entity.
- Section is more of a school term for splitting one grade/standard into parallel groups (Section A, Section B) that may or may not map 1:1 to a tuition class.
- Session is a single meeting of a class on a specific date — one class generates many sessions over a term, each with its own attendance.
In TuitionDesk, all of these roll up to: a Class has a schedule, and a schedule produces Sessions.
The bottom line
If you're setting up TuitionDesk, or just evaluating it against another tool, don't let the word "batch" throw you — it's the same thing as a TuitionDesk class, just a different label. Create your classes the way your centre actually runs: by subject, by grade, by time slot, however your students are really grouped. There's no cap on how many you create, on any plan.
