Does TuitionDesk Work in Sri Lanka? LKR & Setup Guide

How TuitionDesk handles LKR, Stripe payments, and local setup for tuition classes and tutorial institutes in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has one of the most tuition-intensive education cultures in the world. From mass-scale tuition classes held in auditoriums in Colombo to neighbourhood tuition centres in Kandy and Galle, supplementary education is not optional for most Sri Lankan students — it is expected. The A/L (Advanced Level) tuition market alone is enormous, with hundreds of thousands of students attending external tuition classes every year.

If you run a tuition centre or tutorial institute in Sri Lanka, here is how TuitionDesk works for you.

Does TuitionDesk Work in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Select Sri Lanka as your Country of Operation when creating your academy:

If you set the wrong country during signup, update it at Settings → Academy → Country of Operation. Currency and timezone update immediately; existing fee records are not affected.

Online Payments in Sri Lanka: Stripe

TuitionDesk uses Stripe for online fee collection in Sri Lanka. Stripe supports Sri Lankan businesses and enables parent payments via:

  • Credit and debit cards — Visa, Mastercard (issued by Commercial Bank, HNB, Sampath, NSB, and others)
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Bank transfers

Cards are the primary digital payment method in Sri Lanka. Most middle-class parents in Colombo and provincial cities have at least one Visa or Mastercard debit card through their bank.

Connecting Stripe

  1. Go to Settings → Payments in your TuitionDesk dashboard
  2. Connect Stripe (free to register as a Sri Lankan business)
  3. Enable cards and bank transfer
  4. Add your Sri Lankan bank account for LKR payouts

Once connected, every fee reminder includes a Pay Now link. Parents pay by card in seconds; TuitionDesk marks the fee as paid automatically.

Cash payments are dominant in many Sri Lankan tuition centres, especially outside Colombo. TuitionDesk's manual payment recording lets you record cash received and generate a receipt immediately. Use both Stripe and cash recording in parallel — each student's ledger stays accurate.

VAT on Tuition Fees

In Sri Lanka, educational services are generally VAT-exempt under the VAT Act. Most private tuition centres and tutorial institutes do not charge VAT on tuition fees.

TuitionDesk's receipts can be configured without a VAT line for exempt services. If your centre is VAT-registered and charges VAT on other services, the receipt configuration can be adjusted per fee plan.

A/L, O/L, and Scholarship Preparation

The Sri Lankan education system revolves around national examinations:

  • O/L (Ordinary Level) — Grade 11
  • A/L (Advanced Level) — Grade 13, the gateway to university
  • Grade 5 Scholarship Examination — highly competitive, drives enormous tuition demand
  • Primary enrichment — Grades 1–5

TuitionDesk manages each programme as a separate batch with its own teacher, schedule, fee, and student group. A centre can run A/L Combined Maths on Saturday mornings and O/L Science on Wednesday evenings — with completely separate management, attendance, and parent communication for each.

For large A/L tuition classes with hundreds of students in a single batch, TuitionDesk's bulk operations — fee generation, attendance marking, mass reminders — handle scale efficiently.

Fee Reminders for Sri Lankan Parents

TuitionDesk sends automated fee reminders at three points:

  • 3 days before the due date
  • On the due date if the fee is unpaid
  • Daily after the due date until cleared

All messages show amounts in Rs. (Sri Lankan Rupees), the student's name, and the fee period. Delivery via WhatsApp, email, or push notification.

WhatsApp is widely used in Sri Lanka across all age groups. Enable WhatsApp reminders for the best parent response rate on fee due dates.

Session Notes

For exam-focused centres, session notes are particularly useful. Teachers can log which topics were covered in each class (e.g., which chapters of the A/L Chemistry syllabus), what problems the class worked on, and any homework set. Parents see this in the parent portal, reducing individual queries to teachers.

Reports in LKR

All financial reports — outstanding dues, batch revenue, monthly collections — display in Rs. The AI-powered Fee Intelligence feature identifies students at risk of payment default, with amounts shown in Sri Lankan Rupees.

What Is Not Yet Available

  • Subscription billing in LKR — TuitionDesk's platform fee is currently billed in INR. Sri Lankan centres pay in Indian Rupees at the current rate. LKR billing is planned.
  • iPay / FriMi / LankaQR integration — local Sri Lankan payment apps are not yet directly integrated. Stripe covers card payments effectively for most centres.
