Does TuitionDesk Work in New Zealand? NZD, Stripe & GST

How TuitionDesk handles NZD, Stripe payments, GST, and local setup for tuition centres across New Zealand.

TuitionDesk Team··5 min read

New Zealand has a strong private tutoring market, particularly in Auckland where large Asian communities drive demand for after-school enrichment, NCEA preparation, and selective entry exam coaching. Centres here need software that handles NZD natively, integrates with New Zealand payment infrastructure, and keeps communication professional with busy parents.

Here is how TuitionDesk works for New Zealand tuition centres.

Does TuitionDesk Work in New Zealand?

Yes. Select New Zealand as your Country of Operation when creating your academy:

SettingWhat you get
CurrencyNZD (NZ$)
TimezonePacific/Auckland (NZST/NZDT)
Phone dial code+64
Tax labelGST
Payment providerStripe
Date formatDD/MM/YYYY
Academic calendarFeb–Dec

New Zealand observes daylight saving time. TuitionDesk handles the NZST/NZDT switch automatically — your fee reminders always go out at the correct local time regardless of the season.

If you accidentally set the wrong country during signup, update it under Settings → Academy → Country of Operation. The currency and timezone update immediately; existing fee records are unaffected.

Online Payments in New Zealand: Stripe

Stripe has been available in New Zealand since 2015 and is one of the most trusted payment processors in the country.

Stripe in New Zealand supports:

  • Credit and debit cards — Visa, Mastercard, Amex (near-universal in NZ)
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay — widely used among New Zealand parents
  • Bank transfers (Pay by Bank) — account-to-account transfers via open banking
  • Link (Stripe's saved-card accelerator)

For tuition centres billing monthly or per term, Stripe's recurring card charge feature is the simplest setup — parents authorise once and fees are collected automatically each period.

Connecting Stripe

  1. Open Settings → Payments in your TuitionDesk dashboard
  2. Connect your Stripe account (free to create for NZ businesses)
  3. Enable cards, Apple Pay, and bank transfer
  4. Add your New Zealand bank account for NZD payouts

Payouts arrive in your NZ bank within 2 business days.

Eftpos is ubiquitous in physical retail in New Zealand, but for online fee collection, cards and bank transfer via Stripe are the most practical options. Most NZ parents are comfortable paying online by Visa/Mastercard.

GST on Tuition Fees

In New Zealand, tuition services are GST-exempt when provided by registered schools and certain educational institutions. For private tuition centres that are not registered educational establishments, GST at 15% typically applies.

TuitionDesk supports both:

  • GST-inclusive fees: the receipt shows the total with GST amount broken out
  • GST-exempt fees: no tax line on the receipt

Configure this in your fee plan settings, or contact support for guidance.

Check with your accountant or Inland Revenue (IR) to confirm your GST obligations as a private tuition business. TuitionDesk supports both configurations.

NCEA, Cambridge, and IB Preparation

New Zealand tuition centres serve students across NCEA (Level 1–3), Cambridge International, and IB programmes. TuitionDesk handles multiple programmes through batches:

  • One batch per subject, level, or programme type
  • Separate teachers, schedules, fees, and parents per batch
  • Students can be enrolled in multiple batches simultaneously

A centre can run Year 11 NCEA Maths on Monday-Wednesday and Year 13 Calculus on Tuesday-Thursday, with completely separate management for each.

Automated Fee Reminders

TuitionDesk's automated fee reminders mean you never need to manually chase a parent:

  • 3 days before the due date
  • On the due date if unpaid
  • Daily after the due date until cleared

All messages show NZ$ amounts, the student's name, and the billing period. Delivery via WhatsApp, email, or push notification.

New Zealand parents are highly responsive to email. WhatsApp is also widely used among Asian communities in Auckland and Wellington.

Session Notes for Engaged NZ Parents

New Zealand parents — particularly those in the Chinese, Indian, and Korean communities driving much of Auckland's tuition market — are closely involved in their children's progress. TuitionDesk's teacher session notes feature lets teachers record what was covered after each session. Parents see the notes in the parent portal app.

This is particularly effective for NCEA centres where parents want to track exactly which Achievement Standards are being prepared.

AI Reports in NZD

All financial reports — outstanding dues, collection summaries, batch revenue — display in NZ$. The AI-powered Fee Intelligence feature highlights at-risk students and their overdue amounts in New Zealand Dollars.

What Is Not Yet Available

  • Subscription billing in NZD — TuitionDesk's platform fee is currently billed in INR. New Zealand centres pay in Indian Rupees at the current rate. NZD billing is planned.
  • Eftpos integration — Eftpos is a physical point-of-sale network and does not apply to online fee collection.
